International checked baggage
This policy has been revised, with changes taking effect for tickets purchased on or after September 30, 2009. For all United Economy® travel between the U.S. or Canada and several international destinations, a fee may now apply for your first and/or second checked bags.
If you are traveling on an Economy ticket or an Economy award ticket, please see the information below regarding checked baggage fees that may apply. Please note that there are some fee exceptions. All fees below are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise specified, and are for one direction of travel. |
Customers traveling to and from the U.S. and all international destinations are required to check their baggage at least 45 minutes prior to flight departure time.

Travel originating in London
The British Airport Authority strictly limits checked baggage originating in London to 70 pounds (32 kg) per piece. Any piece exceeding this limit must be repackaged into smaller units. We recommend contacting United Reservations in advance when checking items such as musical instruments, sports equipment, camera equipment, etc., that cannot be subdivided to meet the weight limit.

Travel during peak periods to Mexico City
When traveling to Mexico City during peak times, such as spring break and holiday periods, customers wishing to check more than one bag will be asked to voluntarily designate a secondary bag that may be placed on a later flight. When checked baggage levels exceed aircraft space and weight limitations we may only permit a primary bag at times.
During the peak winter travel period of December 1 - January 7, limits will be put in place regarding the number, size and weight of checked bags. In addition, the following guidelines will apply to all customers traveling to or from Mexico City during this period:
- No oversized, overweight or excess bags will be accepted
- Pets will not be accepted as part of a customer's checked baggage
- Only one box will be permitted as part of a customer's free allowance; it must be the original manufacturer's box containing the original item
